Largest collection of Armenian fonts

Mikayel Ghukasyan opened fonter.am in February 2021, after months of building and a few years of telling himself he really should. Armenian Unicode fonts existed back then. They were just scattered across forums, personal pages and links that had died years ago.

The launch fell on February 21, International Mother Language Day, and the announcement called the site a gift to everyone who types in Armenian. The pitch was simple. Fonts in one place, working with the ordinary Armenian keyboard from day one, in a document or on a website.

That announcement also promised more fonts and a way to filter them. Both arrived over the next couple of years.

It is still a one-person project. No team, no budget. The same person adds each font and answers the mail, which is why months sometimes pass between updates.

Hundreds of people come through every day. Designers picking a typeface for a poster, teachers making worksheets for tomorrow's class. Students mostly just need their Armenian text to stop turning into boxes. Five years of that made fonter.am the first place people look when they need an Armenian font.

The archive grows on its own now, too. Type designers and ordinary visitors send in fonts they made or found, and a good share of the catalog arrived exactly that way.
